Great Place to Wait out a Storm
The Banana River Anchorage in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida is just off the Intracoastal Waterway, and is pretty well protected. We spent three nights on the hook here, waiting out some pretty heavy winds from the east.
From the ICW, almost all vessels will need to call to have Mathers Swing Bridge open. The bridge’s vertical clearance is 7 feet. The bridge opens on demand during these hours, and the bridge tender can be reached on VHF Channel 9.
The anchorage is surrounded by homes on both sides, but we didn’t see many boats on the water since it was storming most of the time during our stay. It was quiet, but not secluded. There was the mast of a sunken sailboat immediately behind us. We did have many dolphin visitors!
There is dinghy access, but it’s not the best – the only option to secure the dinghy is by tying it to a tree alongside a busy overpass. From there, restaurants, a grocery store, a laundromat, and a hardware store are all walkable.
