The Great Bridge free wall is located in Battlefield Park South, immediately before the Great Bridge Lock for northbound Loopers. The free dock before the Great Bridge Bridge (vertical clearance of 8 feet) can hold about 5 liveaboard-sized vessels, and was completely full when we arrived shortly before 4 PM.

We went through the really cool bascule bridge and tied up to the free wall on our port side. I’ll be honest, it’s not as nice as the free dock – the metal is heavily rusted, so be careful! There are no cleats, the tie points are splintered pilings so use your old lines.

Signs posted at the free wall state that mooring is limited to 48 hours. We called the number on the signs — 757-382-6411 — and received permission to stay an additional 8 hours and leave the following morning, since we had tied up after 4 PM.

Chesapeake has everything you need to reprovision within ~0.5 mile – grocery (Kroger), laundromat (Laundry Land), and a hardware store (Taylor’s Do it Center). And much more, including many restaurants. There’s even a Walmart less than 2 miles away!
